    World attractions thanks to cinema

TV series and films have turned cities into world attractions. They have literally transformed entire cities and even countries. Tourist destinations have become hits thanks to the screen.

Dubrovnik, the discreet jewel of the Adriatic, is now a must-see after Game of Thrones. Emily in Paris has put the spotlight even more firmly on the French capital. Bali has turned to spiritual tourism after Eat Pray Love. But this success comes at a price - overtourism, high rents and often a loss of authenticity. And then there's Sex and the City, The Bear, Ne Zha 2.

Dubrovnik, the pearl of the Adriatic, is perhaps the most emblematic example of the influence of a TV series on tourism.

    Dubrovnik

"Game of Thrones" caused a tourist boom in the Croatian town, which transformed the economy and the daily lives of local residents. The film series increased the number of visitors by 50% in Dubrovnik. The place has become a city-museum and forced many residents to leave the historic center. The local government had to introduce tourist quotas, limiting the number of visitors to the old town to 8,000 per day.

Even without Emily, Paris has always been attractive, but the series "Emily in Paris" has become a real advertising tool for the French capital.

    Paris

Ridiculed by Parisians for its romantic and naive vision of the city of love, the film won over the rest of the world with its glossy clichés. 38% of tourists cite the series as one of the reasons for visiting Paris, and searches for moving to the city have jumped by 1416%.

Film tourism brings about 900 million pounds each year to the United Kingdom. A number of famous productions have been filmed there, starting with the series about the legendary agent James Bond and ending with the famous wizard Harry Potter, who continues to be the most profitable screen character for British tourism. Every second European who visits the UK comes to see some of the places where the Harry Potter story was born. And the tourist attractions for the little wizard are truly memorable. The studio alone, where the production was filmed, attracts around two million visitors a year. An equal number flock to Edinburgh, where the Harry Potter books were written.

Bali was a favorite destination for surfers and spiritual travelers even before the Julia Roberts film ‘'Eat, Pray, Love!'', but its appearance literally filled the rice fields of the Indonesian island with crowds of tourists seeking well-being and Zen experiences.

The development of spiritual tourism has significantly increased the cost of living on the island and led to rapid urbanization. Today, Bali is trying to find a balance, preserving its identity and environment.

"Sex and the City" is a declaration of female independence in the heart of New York. According to the World Economic Forum, the United States is one of the world's leading tourist destinations, with film tourism playing a significant role in its success. From the iconic streets of Manhattan to the cozy cafes of SoHo, "Sex and the City" has made New York a dream destination for fans of the series.

    Magnolia Bakery

Magnolia Bakery has become a cult place for pastry lovers after Carrie and Miranda discussed their love life over cupcakes.

Due to the constant stream of visitors wanting to take pictures on the stairs where Carrie Bradshaw's apartment is located, the owners have restricted access, but that hasn't stopped people from stopping by and exploring the building.

With its impressive architecture and industrial charm, Chicago is the perfect backdrop for some of the most memorable movie scenes.

    Chicago

From Married with Children to Batman and Transformers, the city's iconic landmarks are a must-see for more than 52 million tourists a year.

One of the most recent and significant productions to contribute to this phenomenon is the series The Bear, filmed entirely in Chicago. This comedy-drama won a record 11 Emmy Awards in 2024, and the restaurant where it was filmed tripled its sandwich sales and reservations.

After breaking Hollywood's monopoly and becoming one of the highest-grossing films of all time, the Chinese animation Ne Zha 2 has also shown its impact on tourism.

    Ne Zha 2

Destinations associated with the mythological tale attract thousands of people every day, and themed cinema cars make the film journey even more unforgettable. Themed cars can create a more comfortable and interesting experience for passengers, who have the opportunity to watch short clips from "Ne Zha 2" in a relaxed atmosphere. Meanwhile, the cars also help to promote Chinese culture.
