French banker Albert Kahn traveled the world
extensively while learning the cultures of different countries. At the end of
the 19th century, he bought a plot of land with an area of nearly 4 hectares
on the outskirts of Paris and set out to create an ideal garden in which to
embody the vivid memories of his travels.
The landscape
designer Achille Duchamp, invited to realize the idea, started the project by
creating a French garden. He combined two eras: classicism of the 18th century
and modern.
All the gardens of Cannes are created in such
a way that, passing from one to another, it is as if you are moving to
different countries and even continents. So, the French and English gardens, as
well as the Foger Forest, are representatives of Europe. The blue forest
represents America and Africa, and the exotic palmarium plants represent
Oceania. And Japanese gardens are a symbol of Buddhist Asia.
During the economic crisis, Kahn went bankrupt
and his gardens were bought by the government. And in 1937 they were open for
public visits. In 1999, the park was completely destroyed by a hurricane, but
in a short time it was revived almost in its original form.
