In fact, what we call and know as a Scottish skirt
is a national male garment known as a kilt - a piece of cloth that is not sewn
into the shape of a skirt, but is simply wrapped around the waist and fastened
with a belt.
It is important to note that each Scottish
clan has its own traditional color which is woven into the kilt pattern. By the
color of the Scottish skirt, one can determine the belonging of a person to a
given clan. Nowadays, this tradition is almost lost, but the kilt itself is
becoming more and more popular. The only mandatory pattern is the infamous
Scottish check.
It is unlikely that the rugged Scots had a
secret predilection for women's fashion in choosing this type of garment.
Practicality, determined by the peculiarities of the country's climate and its
relief, are the probable reason for the imposition of this tradition in
clothing. Uneven terrain, mountains, frequent rain and humidity - in these
cases, tight, wet pants could hinder movement. And the kilt gives complete
freedom of movement. It allows you to climb to the most inaccessible mountain
areas. When wet, this garment dries much faster than trousers, and at night the
resourceful Scots used it as a blanket.
Gradually, the usefulness of the kilt was
appreciated not only by the inhabitants of the highlands of Scotland, but also
by the rest of the population. In the middle of the 19th century, the kilt
gained unexpected popularity among the Scottish nobility and intelligentsia. It
is then adopted by everyone else, even those living abroad.
The kilt can be "big" and
"small". The little kilt is actually what we call a kilt - the fabric
that wraps around the hips. A large kilt is a much larger canvas that you can
start at the neck and go all the way to the heels.
And most importantly, traditionally both types did not involve the wearing of underwear - when the kilt originated, underwear did not exist in clothing.
